The Incarceration Business: America's Private Prisons

The Incarceration Business: America's Private Prisons by Sherwood Ross

The latest report by the American Civil Liberties Union(ACLU) is not likely to inspire politicians to shut down our private prisons when prison operators are pouring millions of dollars into their campaign coffers.

Jobbing out the incarceration business, said lawyer David Shapiro of the ACLU Prison Project “has been a bonanza for the private prison industry, which rakes in billions of dollars a year and dishes out multi-million dollar compensation packages to its top executives.”

And those top executives, in turn, between 1998 and 2000, for example, wrote over $1.2-million in checks to political candidates and political parties. And why not, when their firms have received such huge public subsidies as $68 billion in tax-free bonds to help them build?

Since the 1980s Reagan era shift to privatization, more than 150 private facilities---detention centers, jails, and prisons----with a capacity of about 120,000 have been opened, and 7% of all U.S. adults inmates have been dumped in them.

“Abuse of prisoners, escapes, prison violence including prisoner-on-prisoner, prisoner-on-guard and vice versa, restricted and malfeasant health care, providing rotten food, and other prison management problems are characteristic of the private prison industry,” writes sociologist Margaret Rosenthal in “The Long Term View,” a journal published by the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. Rosenthal is Professor Emerita, School of Social Work, Salem State College, Mass.
“One study found 49% more prisoner-on-staff and 65% higher prisoner-on-prisoner assaults in private medium and minimum security prisons than in public ones,” Rosenthal writes. Example: at the Northeast Ohio Correction Center in Youngstown, operated by industry leader Corrections Corporation of America(CCA), in a period of just 14 months there were 13 stabbings, two murders and six escapes that ended in violence. Rosenthal said other sociologists have documented “many other examples of brutality and incompetence perpetrated in CCA-run facilities.”
Since private prisons prosper in proportion to the number of prisoners they house, “the suspicion remains that they may hold on to prisoners, particularly ones who are not troublesome as a means to earn extra money,” Rosenthal writes. Even when operators do not directly control discharge decisions, she notes, “by controlling record-keeping about prisoners’ behavior they can have a determining role in establishing when a prisoner is to be released or paroled.”

The ACLU report, titled, “Banking on Bondage: Private Prisons and Mass Incarcerations,” was released Nov. 2 and traces the rise of the for-profit prison companies that have “capitalized on the nation’s addiction to incarceration (2.4-million behind bars) to achieve gigantic profits.”

“Spurred by criminal laws that impose needlessly steep sentences---especially for low-level, non-violent offenders---and curtail rehabilitation opportunities, the United States today imprisons more people than any other nation in the world,” an ACLU news release states.

“The crippling cost of incarcerating increasing numbers of Americans has saddled government budgets with rising debt and exacerbated the current fiscal crisis confronting states across the nation. Yet the two largest private prison companies alone obtained nearly $3 billion in revenue in 2010,” the ACLU statement said.

It noted that Arizona is seeking to add 5,000 more private beds despite its own Auditor General’s finding that for-profit imprisonment may cost more than jailing them in public facilities.

The ACLU report asserts that mass incarceration “wreaks havoc on communities by depriving individuals of their liberty, draining government resources and bringing little or no benefit to public safety.” The biggest losers in the privatization fiasco, apart from the taxpayers, are members of the Afro-American and Hispanic communities whose harsh sentences for minor crimes are filling many prison beds. Many marijuana prisoners are doing harder time than white collar criminals.

“It is imperative that we halt the expansion of for-profit incarceration,” Shapiro said, as “The private prison industry helped create, and continues to feed off, the social ill of mass incarceration.” He concludes, “Private prisons cannot be part of the solution---economic or ethical---to our nation’s addiction to incarceration.”

To “halt the expansion” of private prisons is an urgent first step---as long as it is quickly followed up by closing every one of them now in operation. This would be a fine project for church groups and civic associations. And one way to find beds for private inmates would be to set free the hundreds of thousands of prisoners doing time for victimless crimes such as marijuana possession and to transfer others who rightfully belong in mental institutions, not behind bars. #

Who's Behind the Mayhem at the Occupy Oakland Protests?

Who's Behind the Mayhem at the Occupy Oakland Protests? by Joshua Holland

During an Occupy Oakland camp meeting on November 3 – the morning after a boisterous but peaceful day of protests in Oakland devolved into a barrage of teargas and “less lethal” bullets after nightfall -- about a dozen “occupiers” expressed their frustration with the vandalism that had marred the evening; acts of mayhem committed by a small number of people among the thousands who took part in the protests.

“Who are these people?” asked one protester who would only identify himself as Dave. “They're not staying here with us, they're not participating in the GAs [general assemblies] and as far as I'm concerned, they're not a part of this movement.”

Another protester spoke of how the broken windows and spray-painted graffitti had overshadowed the “beautiful thing” they'd accomplished during the day. “We shut down the fucking Port of Oakland,” she said, “and all the news is talking about today is this bullshit that went down last night.”

Another activist spoke of the sense of vulnerability she felt, as police have come to rely on a handy group of “black bloc anarchists” to justify their violent responses.

Indeed, on November 10, I spoke with an Oakland police officer about the department's crowd control strategy that night. “My feeling is that if you want to protest or whatever, that's fine by me. But when things get out of control, then public safety has to step in.” He said the police had learned that “things were getting ugly” that night, with “this small group of troublemakers breaking windows and spray-painting buildings.”

I asked him to clarify at what point the decision had been made to intervene with a large number of riot police, and he responded, “I can't tell you all the details.”

The occupiers' sentiments that morning represent a virtually unreported aspect of the increasingly tense situation in Oakland. In most media accounts, it is simply assumed that the vandals are a part of Occupy Oakland. In the prevailing narrative, “black bloc” anarchists wreaking havoc go hand-in-hand with the occupation.

Even decrying the work of “anarchists” is misleading. The majority of self-identified anarchists with whom I have spoken do not advocate vandalism or violence. They see it as harmful to their aims. A “street medic,” who says her “values are anti-capitalist, anti-hierarchical and incorporate an anti-oppression framework,” writes that while she doesn't believe “property destruction is violence” or agree “with the idea that cops can be provoked,” she nonetheless condemned the “tactics” of November 2:
"The breaking of windows and vandalizing of businesses which supported the strike was utterly stupid and counterproductive; and watching black bloc-ers run from the cops and not protect the camp their actions had endangered, an action which ultimately left behind many mentally ill people, sick people, street kids, and homeless folks to defend themselves against the police onslaught was disturbing and disgusting in ways I can’t even articulate."
Similarly, not everyone I've seen trying to mix it up with police wore black masks – it's an over-simplification. What that small minority seems to have in common is their youth. There are angry young people in Oakland whose "revolutionary" zeal is unchecked by the wisdom that accrues with life experience.

Another unreported reality is the lengths to which protesters have attempted to police their own. On October 25, I saw several activists physically intervene when a group of about eight young men decided to flip over a police car. On November 2, another group restrained a man who was throwing objects at a line of riot police. “Those fuckers shot me!” he shouted, as they pulled him away from the scene.

That night, a chant from the crowd reverberated off the buildings on Telegraph Avenue in downtown Oakland: 'Don't throw shit! Don't throw shit!'

But that view is not shared by everyone at the camp, and the “leaderless” and “horizontal” nature of the Occupy movement makes self-policing difficult. An “open letter” from a self-described “anarchist participant” in Oakland's November 2 general strike pushes back on what he or she calls “a great deal of slander” in this debate:
"Isolating people based on their ... symbolic defiance of exploitative property by making absurd claims of them being “Outside agitators,” as if it they are somehow separate from the many people who have been actively involved in building [the movement,] should not only be considered an attack on solidarity, but an attack on movements of the people. What divides movements of the people, weakens movements of the people."
At the encampment in front of Oakland's City Hall, now a month old, one can easily fall into a protracted philosophical debate about whether vandalism constitutes an act of violence, and the degree to which destroying property is an appropriate tactic to use in an ostensibly nonviolent movement. “Diversity of tactics” has become a catchphrase of sorts among many occupiers; a euphemism for allowing pointless and self-defeating acts of destruction to go unchecked.

It's an interesting academic discussion to have in a graduate seminar in political philosophy, but it betrays a blind-spot within this “leaderless” movement that threatens to end the occupation in Oakland. The debate ignores the fact that these tactics, regardless of their legitimacy, are totally counter-productive for advancing the movement. Breaking windows has a negligible impact on the bottom lines of corporations. The people who were hurt when someone smashed the windows of Tully's Coffee on the corner of Frank Ogawa Plaza were the low-wage baristas who weren't paid for the shifts they missed while the store was undergoing repairs.

It also infuriates the local community, dividing the occupation from its natural supporters, and gives law enforcement ample justification for its harsh crackdowns.

Tai Moses, a longtime resident of Oakland (and a former managing editor of AlterNet), is as sympathetic to the goals of the Occupy movement – holding banks accountable, addressing spiraling inequality and the pernicious influence of money in our political system – as anyone. But in an email exchange, she expressed sentiments that are becoming increasingly common in Oakland. “For people like me,” she wrote, “who live in Oakland, who have invested in our struggling downtown, who are heartbroken and furious when people masquerading as 'protesters' vandalize our city, break windows, and hurl insults and provocations at police, it is the issue. The people doing these things are the same people who descended on Oakland during the Oscar Grant demonstrations. They didn't care about Oscar Grant and they don't care about Occupy Oakland -- they just want to destroy property and set cop cars on fire. They want violence. And they end up front and center on the news as the face of the demonstrations, when in fact their goals have nothing to do with the goals of the occupation.”

And Oakland has two occupations – one associated with a national movement, and the other a horde of journalists who have invaded the city. “If it bleeds, it ledes,” goes the cliché, and the vandalism has become the focus of an enormous amount of media attention.

There's an intense distrust of the media within Occupy Oakland, a distrust that expresses itself in the naive belief that media narratives are fixed and unmovable. It is certainly true that protests in this country are greeted with skepticism by the corporate media. But it's also the case that ample “b-roll” featuring damaged windows, graffitti, the burned-out wreckage of jury-rigged barricades and masked people throwing things at riot cops provides an enormous amount of grist for the mill – a fact totally denied by that faction who believe that a “diversity of tactics” trumps smart media strategy.

Oakland officials are gearing up for another crackdown on the camp, justified in large part by recent acts of vandalism. But it won't be the end of the occupation. The good news is that there's an increasing awareness among the majority of occupiers that they must redouble their efforts to self-police.

It remains to be seen how successful those efforts will be. The future of Occupy Oakland may just rest on who ends up with the upper-hand in an often contentious internal debate over the role of mayhem in the streets connected to an ostensibly peaceful revolution.

The Fed Under Fire: The Federal Reserve Is The Black Hole In American Democracy

The Fed Under Fire: The Federal Reserve Is The Black Hole In American Democracy - Dailybail.com

The Federal Reserve is one of the most powerful and secretive institutions in Washington, long considered beyond the reach of lawmakers. But now, as details emerge of how the Fed secretly doled out more than a trillion dollars during the financial crisis, a rare bipartisan movement in Congress demands that the Fed be held accountable.

Has America Become a Disease?

Has America Become a Disease? by R. Mark Sink

Those who have been fortunate enough to learn that information propaganda is real and have moved to the Internet for their news certainly have a much clearer picture of the true state of not only America, but the world at large.

We can see the effects of the condition people preside in through their comments and elaborations. One could easily affirm that America's degradation has long been in the works. It is suggested that our language has been greatly affected through various institutions of learning that focus on achieving wealth as the number one primary element that determines value in life.

This being the driver that mounts to the horse propaganda that is intended to degrade as the food for the psychopaths who control media and educational information. It might be said that because of the power that wealth has been given, the psychopaths will always be around. If we really intend to stop their viciousness in destroying life's values, we'll need to address wealth by removing its power.

The powers that be would certainly like to follow this plan, that is to say, they would co-opt the absence of fair exchange into total world slavery at their command when at the same time, it is this very power over others through monetary means that remains unchecked and if addressed opens the door to solving this key issue of power. The Occupy Movement seems to have known this was the main issue as in the perpetual separation of wealth disparity.

What stops all these discussions from ever reaching day light is the hidden power that the media seems to throw up occasionally into their own sick bags, and have denounced as orbs of "we care," amidst their unending rampage of lies.

"Is There No Shame?" asks Washington Blog in relation to our current state of affairs and the Penn State scandal of horror?

There are certainly many among the movement who understand the problem, but this does not provide the means of replacing those who control the overall message.

If this message was open to the true state of affairs, millions could awaken and become educated, and begin to work with others to really solve the pressing survival issues we face as a living species.

I'm sorry to say we have become much less capable of reasoning through the vastness of our information access which is literally infested with metaphors that alter reality.

It seems this is part of the intended propaganda, as with the "Empowered" whore archetype destroying the feminine where to add in the comments the presumed four pillars of society were "race, religion, family, and nation.

I'm not sure where this comes from but reveals how as a people we no longer see beneath the metaphors that paint our life as real.

The four pillars of society are food, water, clothing, and shelter, as beyond these, everything is blaspheme. It is the charging of the mythic gods and racing across the sky, a place that should only be reserved for elders to offer navigation.

We have created a prison for the mind through endless imagery advancing the metaphorical delusions.

Psychopaths seem to live within this black hole, a place where there is nothing but feedback that now feeds from the ponerized state.

As the psychopaths devalue our lives, our response is to reject the propaganda that prevails and to separate ourselves from extremists in any form which includes the kleptomaniacs which seems filled with nonsense purposely to destroy the overall consciousness, from starting World War III as though that makes sense in our present world, to telling people if you can't bow down to the pathocracy, you should starve to death.

These stigmatas are designed to confuse the overall public that in the next election, Obama and his secret team will rig the election and you are going to accept it because it is what you expected. They have no intention of letting Ron Paul anywhere near the Presidency. If that were to happen, you can bet that retaliation is already planned.

The good news is that for every screw up the establishment performs from this day forward, the Occupy Movement will only get bigger and more powerful. Let's pray that true consciousness and peace will finally receive the blessing it deserves, and that the movement can begin to grow together in world wide fashion.

Perfect Storm of Internet Censorship

Perfect Storm of Internet Censorship - Global Research TV

In recent weeks the governments of Britain, Israel, the US, Japan, India and China have reported alleged cyber attacks by foreign militaries, hackers, and malicious software like Duqu, a virus similar to the Stuxnet cyber weapon constructed by Israel and the US for use against Iran's nuclear program.

Although the nature and origin of the attacks or even whether they took place at all cannot be independently confirmed, the supposed threats are being used to propose punishing new legislation aimed at stifling internet freedoms and are igniting new rivalries in what many see as the battlefield of the 21st century: cyberspace.

Major Wars and Suppression of American Freedoms Planned BEFORE 9/11

Major Wars and Suppression of American Freedoms Planned BEFORE 9/11 - Washington Blog

Iran War Threats, Militarization of American Police and Spying on Americans All Started BEFORE 9/11

Many things which we’ve been told have only happened recently actually started a long time ago.

For example, the mainstream media claims that Iran is close to building a nuclear weapon. But the Christian Science Monitor notes that the U.S. has been claiming for more than 30 years that Iran was on the verge of nuclear capability.

And the decision to threaten to bomb Iran was made before 9/11.

As another example, journalists from across the spectrum have documented the militarization of police forces in the United States, including, CNN, Huffington Post, Forbes, Esquire, The Atlantic, Salon, and the Cato Institute.

Indeed, police shooting peaceful “occupy” protesters with rubber bullets, tear gas and other projectiles and brutally beating them has brought this issue to the attention of the American public. See this, this and this.
But the militarization of police started long before 9/11 … in the 1980s. As Radley Balko testified before the House Subcommittee on Crime:
Militarization [of police forces is] a troubling trend that’s been on the rise in America’s police departments over the last 25 years.
***

Since the late 1980s, Mr. Chairman, thanks to acts passed by the U.S. Congress, millions of pieces of surplus military equipment have been given to local police departments across the country.

We’re not talking just about computers and office equipment. Military-grade semi-automatic weapons, armored personnel vehicles, tanks, helicopters, airplanes, and all manner of other equipment designed for use on the battlefield is now being used on American streets, against American citizens.

Academic criminologists credit these transfers with the dramatic rise in paramilitary SWAT teams over the last quarter century.

SWAT teams were originally designed to be used in violent, emergency situations like hostage takings, acts of terrorism, or bank robberies. From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, that’s primarily how they were used, and they performed marvelously.

But beginning in the early 1980s, they’ve been increasingly used for routine warrant service in drug cases and other nonviolent crimes. And thanks to the Pentagon transfer programs, there are now a lot more of them.
Many other things which we’ve been told happened after 9/11 actually occurred beforehand as well.
For example:
  • The Afghanistan war was planned before 9/11 (see this and this)
  • The Patriot Act was planned before 9/11. Indeed, former Counter Terrorism Czar Richard Clarke told Stanford law professor Lawrence Lessig:

After 9/11 the government drew up the Patriot Act within 20 days and it was passed.
The Patriot Act is huge and I remember someone asking a Justice Department official how did they write such a large statute so quickly, and of course the answer was that it has been sitting in the drawers of the Justice Department for the last 20 years waiting for the event where they would pull it out.
    (4:30 into this video).
  • Cheney dreamed of giving the White House the powers of a monarch long before 9/11
  • Cheney and Rumsfeld actively generated fake intelligence which exaggerated the threat from an enemy in order to justify huge amounts of military spending long before 9/11. And see this
  • It was known long before 9/11 that torture doesn’t work to produce accurate intelligence … but is an effective way to terrorize people
  • And – sadly – America played dirty games to justify and win wars before 9/11
Note: 9/11 itself is beyond the scope of this essay, although the Co-Chair of the Congressional Inquiry into 9/11 – and former head of the Senate Intelligence Committee – calls for a new 9/11 investigation, Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg says that the government has ordered the media not to cover 9/11, and high-level officials are eager to spill the beans about what happened on 9/11 … but no one in Washington or the media wants to hear.

"How does it become a wo(man) to behave towards the American government today? I answer, that s/he cannot without disgrace be associated with it".

Henry David Thoreau

We recently have received your "Notice of Levy," and "SUMMONS."

Let us be clear why we are not paying your bill.

On April 04, 2004, three of your co-workers in the Military branch of the US government came to Cindy's home to inform us that her oldest son, Casey, had been "killed in combat in Iraq." After Cindy somehow pulled herself from the floor after falling there screaming, "NO, NO, NO!" the Grim Reapers in Army costumes didn't have much more to tell Casey's shocked and devastated family, except they asked Cindy for her Social Security number.

Let us go back a little farther than 04/04/04 - let us go back to September 11, 2001 when the US was attacked and over 3000 Americans were killed. There is much evidence that even if 9/11 was not "an inside job," there are many irregularities and lies in the "official story." Whatever happened that day, the tragedy was used to justify the illegal and supremely immoral invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan - and today, the current regime is still using the, "we were attacked on 9/11," meme to justify its crimes of aggression against, not only the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, but Pakistan, Somalia, Uganda, Yemen and Palestine (via the billions the US gives to Israel every year). Not to mention the outrageous attack on the people of Libya and recent assassination of Moammar Gaddaffi for the purpose of regime change to a more pro-U.S. corporate government.

Casey was only in the Army anyway because one of your colleagues in the Military branch lied to him and I think it's been pretty well proven that these wars embarked upon by the US were based on lies - but the confessed liars such as: Donald Rumsfeld, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, and George Tenet, among others, are still roaming free and profiting off of the wars through unethical connections to the war machine, books and speaking engagements. There is also much evidence that these people and other Kleptocrats just take, take, take from us and have many, many loopholes that protect them from paying too much in income taxes from their ill-gotten gains.

Another example of a war profiteer not paying any taxes is General Electric. Not only does GE realize vast profits from these illegal and immoral wars of terror that are currently being waged all over the world, but it also profits off of the highly dangerous nuclear power technology that is poisoning the planet as we speak.

GE not only did not pay any taxes for the year 2010, it received a "1.1 billion dollar tax benefit" (according to CNN Money) for its tax filings in the U.S. How did GE do this when it made a 10.8 billion dollar profit in 2010? The company recorded a loss here in the U.S. of 408 million. GE is just one company or wealthy individual that has teams of lawyers and accountants to drive trucks through the loopholes the U.S. government legislates for them. Are you saying we owe more money than General Electric?

Well, our family recorded a loss in 2004 that is priceless. How can one put a value on a human being - an oldest child - a beloved nephew? Dozens of people who knew Casey are still feeling his loss in very profound and painful ways - Cindy grew his body in her body giving him the best nutrients she could for his health - she gave birth to him after 20 hours of labor on May 29th, 1979 - she loved him and nurtured him with the milk from her own body for 14 months - she sat up with him when he was ill - she helped him with his homework and Cindy sewed his Boy Scout patches on his sash and stood with him when he was awarded his Eagle Scout Award - she sobbed when he went to war and her life was over the day his was.

Being childless herself, Christy adores her nieces and nephews and was like a 2nd Mom to Casey - and is still very, very close to Casey's three surviving siblings and their children, today. How can you say any of us who have had our loved ones stolen from us for lies owe you even one more penny? Does the abuse know no end?

For almost five decades of our lives, we sisters were taxpaying, law-abiding citizens. Sure, we got the occasional traffic or parking tickets, but we dutifully paid them or went to traffic school. IRS Agent, can you imagine in your Revenuer's heart the agony we felt when we realized that we had funded the murder of our own dear Casey? As our awareness grew, so did our disgust with our complicity in this system as the body count for totally innocent civilians rose. We now feel that for at least 30 years of taxpaying perfidy, we funded the murders and torture of millions! The only way we could live with ourselves was to stop being accessories to our government's war crimes and crimes against humanity.

To whoever is reading this: You're a working stiff aren't you? You work for one of the most evil agencies in a deeply corrupt and criminal organization, but you are still a working person! Does it bother you that the banks and Wall Street have received billions of bailout dollars from the U.S. government while you are taking money from people in our own class to do so? Does it bother you that the rich are getting wealthier and you have to try and collect your pound of flesh, or blood money, from a mother and an auntie who have already had their own flesh and blood violently ripped from their lives?

To honor Casey's needless sacrifice and to protect others, we will not pay these bills. You do what you have to do, but our membership in the human race demands that we withhold money from such a homicidal, nay genocidal cabal as the US government. Scores of people in this nation have taken the principled stand that we take and we feel that our moral compasses trump your "laws." We could have taken the strategy of only paying a portion of our taxes like some do, but we feel we have no control over where our money is spent.

If Citizens United (Citizens United v. The Federal Elections Commission) can claim that money is Free Speech and it can spend freely on its political causes, then we feel we have the same right to withhold our money in an act of moral courage and loyalty to not only our brothers, sisters and children being murdered, displaced or tortured, but to our own First Amendment Rights. We have sacrificed much and invested not only our own money, but also our very lives in our campaigns for peace and justice. We will never again co-operate with the USA in its crimes against peace.

You can try and make an example of us, but we will fight you tooth and nail and we will put the wars of your government on trial. If it comes to that, peace will get its day in court, finally. Let's put the real criminals on trial, huh?

We strongly reiterate: we won't help fund the terrorism of this government abroad and the economic terrorism of this government here at home.

Like we said before, we can't put a value on Casey's life, and since we were not his dependents, we can't place a value on his potential future earnings. We can only mourn his loss and the loss of any potential children he may have had and the life he may have lived if he were not killed for lies - this is a fact that we will have to deal with every day of the rest of our lives - we don't need the additional harassment of his murderers on top of this tragic and unnecessary reality.

Any questions?

Burning Down the House

Burning Down the House by Richard William Posner

Attempting to put out a fire by heaping more fuel upon it is clearly an exercise in futility.

If your house is burning you have basically two options; do nothing and allow the house to burn to the ground or extinguish the fire completely and rebuild your house making sure it is totally fireproof this time.

A problem cannot be solved by applying more of the same reasoning and principles that created it.

The for-profit, kapitalist paradigm is an unsustainable, unspeakably evil, criminal enterprise. It is the problem. It is the fire burning down the house. Unless and until it is completely extinguished, what we'll get is what we've got and have had for many centuries. In due time the house will be completely destroyed and nothing will remain.

This existing system cannot be fixed. The reason for this is quite simple; it's not broken! It is functioning exactly as desired for the small minority that controls it. They are the fire-starters, a group loosely referred to as bankers or financiers.

That minority, along with the lapdogs and sycophants from the corporate and political classes, is a parasitic infestation within the human species and upon the body of Gaia. The parasites are controlling the hosts and killing them at an ever increasing pace. The parasite must be extirpated.

When your house is burning, you don't take the fire from the living room and move it to the dining room to "fix" the problem. We've got to put out this fire completely, tear down the ruins and build a completely new, fireproof house.

The Ovis Aries Syndrome?

Unfortunately most of us, the 99%, have been so indoctrinated to the top-down, hierarchical systems that have ruled us for millennia, we can't conceive of doing things any other way. Even when it gets bad enough to arouse a bit of rebelliousness in us, all we seem to do is meekly plead for the system be repaired.

Only the complete demolition of the existing system and its replacement with an entirely new, non-profit, open civil society will suffice. It's time for us to finally become civilised.

Populations are now so receptive to blindingly successful systems of indoctrination that willful ignorance has become the new intellectualism.

We have been conditioned to comply rather than question. Ideological "belief", blind loyalty, patriotism and faith trump rationality and critical thinking every time. My country right or wrong! Think about it if you can.

We have been trained to "believe" that competition is better than cooperation. We so believe regardless that common sense and experience show clearly, repeatedly and incontrovertibly the complete opposite to be true. Competition is merely a euphemism for war. As anyone knows, in any such scenario, if someone is to win, someone else must lose. To the winner go the spoils.

Now, after centuries of cleaving to this ill-conceived, regressive paradigm, despite overwhelming evidence of its utterly destructive nature, we have a class of parasite, the "1%", that has finally "won" the "competition" and is sucking the Life out of Life on a global scale.

The sustenance of the parasites, today known as "capitalism", with its all-encompassing program of globalisation, a usurious, privatised monetary system based upon fraudulent commodity money and the for-profit paradigm of gluttonous, unrestrained consumerism must be utterly eliminated.

That fire must be drowned, leaving not so much as a smoking ember. No chance can be left for this conflagration to ever be rekindled. Thus deprived and isolated, the parasites will die off. They are utterly non-productive, incapable of self-reliance and can only survive by the labor and depravation of others.

And the first one now will later be last...

Parasitism is an aberration. Life is ultimately a symbiotic process. Given a chance to evolve within the constraints of natural law, the human species could become a fully functional partner in the Life process.

The Universe is yet emergent and humanity nascent.

The consummation of the marriage of Mammon and Mars has produced an offspring that relishes in and profits from destruction and death. If the small minority that worships this monstrous deity is allowed push the rest down a path that is clearly suicidal, our species will never attain its full potential.

The creatures we named dinosaurs dominated Life on Earth for over 200 million years before succumbing to natural forces beyond their comprehension. Not their fault. Could happen to anyone.

After a paltry 200 thousand years, the species Homo sapiens teeters on the brink of extinction as a result of its own hubris and recklessness. Nobody's fault but our own.

That the critical moment we now face would come was clear to me at least 30 years ago and I've tried to warn people of it most of my Life. Being a mere blue collar labourer, without "credentials", my voice was never heard.

Now that the credentialed pundits are announcing old news as new and the masses are finally responding tepidly to the oppression that has been building stealthily around them for so long, I fear it's too little, too late.

The momentum of this Imperial cycle has passed the Rubicon. The sad and bloody folly that passes for human history will be repeated yet again. This time, I'm afraid the blood will bathe the entire world.

In my opinion, if the protests, demonstrations and civil disobedience in amerika escalate and start to gain momentum, cohesion and broad support, our ostensible government will make the dictatorships we allegedly oppose, even though many if not most were installed by us, appear benevolent by comparison.

The hypocrisy of Hilary Clinton, condemning various tyrannical regimes for using violence against peaceful protesters, whilst our militarised police are doing exactly the same, is simply nauseating.

We are a global family, community, tribe, clan; whatever descriptor you pick, we are all fundamentally the same, bound together by Life. It's time to recognise that this is an asset, embrace it and use it for the benefit of all.

It is time for the parasites that profit from death to be cut from the body of humanity once and for all.

If not, then in this time of cancerous kapitalist globalisation, what has happened to the least of us will soon happen to all save a privileged few who will fiddle with gluttonous glee while burning down the house...once and for all.

Second City – Dallas – Calls for a General Strike as Part of “Occupy” Wall Street

Second City – Dallas – Calls for a General Strike as Part of “Occupy” Wall Street - Washington Blog

Occupy Oakland held a general strike on November 2nd which had many tens or even hundreds of thousands of protesters, and which shut down the nation’s 5th largest port.

Yesterday, Occupy Dallas called for a general strike on November 30th:

Before the General Assembly of Occupy Dallas,

Whereas the General Assembly of Occupy Dallas stands in support of Occupy Wall Street which started September 17, 2011 at Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District. The movement has now spread across the country and is influencing the world. Occupy Dallas is a horizontally organized resistance movement to counteract the unprecedented consolidation of wealth and power in the world today. The Occupy movement does not have a hierarchy or a formalized structure. The Occupy movement represents those that feel disenfranchised from the current socioeconomic system because of policy passed by our political institutions and the actions of those in control of the unprecedented consolidation of wealth;

Whereas by consensus we view that for the first time in American history, current generations will not be as prosperous as preceding generations. This denial of the American Dream is at the heart of Occupy Movement.

Whereas by consensus we view that the social system has become tilted against us by:

1. Unfair treatment and discrimination against individuals based on Gender, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Race, National Origin, Physical Ability or any other factor that minimizes any person’s individual worth

2. The commoditization of individual privacy

3. Profit driven news sources with individual agendas

4. Narrow definitions of what constitutes a family;

Whereas by consensus we view that the Political system has become tilted against us by:

1. Widespread deregulation that has eliminated common sense regulations that have insured long term prosperity and protection from predatory business practices

2. A Tax code that is cumbersome and rife with loopholes and language that favors an economic minority at the expense of the majority of wage earners

3. A Supreme Court decision that has put into place the unprecedented concept of extending first amendment protections to political donations

4. Jeopardizing the future of social security through investiture and privatization schemes

5. By reducing funding to our education system our future generations are provided a lesser education that previous generations received because of increased class size and reduced resources

6. Because of decreasing funding individuals are saddled with higher student loan debt

7. A political system where even the most perfunctory tasks of government are partisan battles;

Whereas by consensus we view that the Economic system has become tilted against us by:

1. A general degradation of the employer and employee relationship namely

a. the practice referred to as “dead peasants” insurance policies where by companies profit from the death of individuals.

b. the elimination of traditional pension and retirement arrangements in favor of 401 (k) investment vehicles.

c. outsourcing of jobs

d. failing or eliminating paid sick leave

e. failing or eliminating paid maternity leave

f. relying on part-time workers rather than investing in full time employees

g. scheduling work hours to insure that employees cannot obtain offered benefits

h. failing to provide a livable wage

i. reducing and eliminating employer based health care coverage

2. Incredible income disparity between management and employees.

3. Active discouragement and intimidation of unionization of the workforce

4. Instituting illogical accounting practices

5. Engaging in unethical business practices that jeopardize the long term financial stability of the country

6. Viewing financial profit as more important than the individual worth of a people.

Then let it them be resolved by the General Assembly of Occupy Dallas through consensus on Date (___________________) that we call upon all people to engage in a General Strike on November 30th, 2011. We implore all people to:

1. Refrain from Buying or Selling any goods or services including but not limited to, any petroleum products, consumer goods or bank transactions; starting at 12:01 am to 11:59pm on November 30th, 2011.

2. Refrain from working for a wage starting at 12:01 am to 11:59pm on November 30th, 2011 excluding those individuals that provide emergency and necessary functions including but not limited to Police, Fire and Medical personnel.

3. Join or form local groups to peacefully protest against the above stated elements.

Please join us in solidarity to make known our grievances and demand substantive change to insure our future.
Dallas will not be the last city to strike.

The New York City “General Assembly” has discussed a general strike for months (I’ve been following the discussion online), and I predict that – within the next couple of months – a lot of cities will go on strike.

12 Facts About Money And Congress That Are So Outrageous That It Is Hard To Believe That They Are Actually True

12 Facts About Money And Congress That Are So Outrageous That It Is Hard To Believe That They Are Actually True by Michael Snyder

Do you want to get rich?  Just get elected to Congress.  The U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives are absolutely packed with wealthy people that are very rapidly becoming even wealthier.  The collective net worth of the members of Congress is now measured in the billions of dollars.  The people that we have elected to the House and Senate are absolutely swimming in money.  Unfortunately, it is not easy to get elected to Congress.  In this day and age you generally have to be heavily connected to those that are very wealthy to get into Congress because it takes gigantic amounts of cash to win campaigns.  But if you can get in to the club, you pretty much have it made.  The numbers that you are about to read are very difficult to believe and they should deeply sadden you.  They show that Congress has become all about money.  Congressional races are mostly financed by wealthy people, most of the people that we elect to Congress are very wealthy, and they rapidly get wealthier after they are elected.  All of this money has turned our republic into something far different than our founding fathers intended.

The following are 12 statistics about money and Congress that are so outrageous that it is hard to believe that they are actually true....

#1 The collective net worth of all of the members of Congress increased by 25 percent between 2008 and 2010.

#2 The collective net worth of all of the members of Congress is now slightly over 2 billion dollars.  That is "billion" with a "b".

#3 This happened during a time when the net worth of most American households was declining rapidly.  According to the Federal Reserve, the collective net worth of all American households decreased by 23 percent between 2007 and 2009.

#4 The average net worth for a member of Congress is now approximately 3.8 million dollars.

#5 The net worth of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi increased by 62 percent from 2009 to 2010.  In 2009 it was reported that she had a net worth of 21.7 million dollars, and in 2010 it was reported that she had a net worth of 35.2 million dollars.

#6 The top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, saw his wealth grow by 29 percent from 2009 to 2010.  He is now worth approximately 9.8 million dollars.

#7 More than 50 percent of the members of the U.S. Congress are millionaires.

#8 In 2008, the average cost of winning a seat in the House of Representatives was $1.1 million and the average cost of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate was $6.5 million.  Spending on political campaigns has gotten way out of control.

#9 Insider trading is perfectly legal for members of the U.S. Congress - and they refuse to pass a law that would change that.

#10 The percentage of millionaires in Congress is more than 50 times higher than the percentage of millionaires in the general population.

#11 U.S. Representative Darrell Issa is worth approximately 220 million dollars.  His wealth grew by approximately 37 percent from 2009 to 2010.

#12 The wealthiest member of Congress, U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, is worth approximately 294 million dollars.

So how are members of Congress becoming so wealthy?

Well, there are lots of ways they are raking in the cash, but one especially alarming thing that goes on is that members of Congress often make investments in companies that will go up significantly if legislation that is being considered by Congress "goes the right way".

This is called a "conflict of interest", but it happens constantly in Congress and nobody seems to get into any trouble for it.

The following is video of Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes ambushing Nancy Pelosi about one particular conflict of interest involving credit card legislation.  As you can see, she does not want to talk about it....

As noted above, insider trading is perfectly legal for members of Congress.

A law that would ban insider trading by members of Congress has been stalled for years on Capitol Hill.

So has this been a significant benefit to members of Congress?

Well, there has been at least one study that appears to indicate that members of Congress have been much more successful in the stock market than members of the general public have....
A 2004 study of the results of stock trading by United States Senators during the 1990s found that that senators on average beat the market by 12% a year. In sharp contrast, U.S. households on average underperformed the market by 1.4% a year and even corporate insiders on average beat the market by only about 6% a year during that period. A reasonable inference is that some Senators had access to - and were using - material nonpublic information about the companies in whose stock they trade.
Of course all of this could just be a coincidence, right?

Meanwhile, members of Congress keep telling the rest of us that we are just going to have to cut back because times are tough.

For example, during an interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News, Nancy Pelosi actually claimed that we should try to encourage poor people to have less children because it costs the government so much money to take care of them....
PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?

PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.
This elitist attitude extends all the way into the White House as well.  Earlier this year, Barack Obama made the following statement....
"If you’re a family trying to cut back, you might skip going out to dinner, or you might put off a vacation."
Meanwhile, the Obamas are living the high life at taxpayer expense.  In a previous article I mentioned one outrageously expensive vacation taken by the Obamas that was paid for by our taxes....
"Back in August, Michelle Obama took her daughter Sasha and 40 of her friends for a vacation in Spain.

So what was the bill to the taxpayers for that little jaunt across the pond?
It is estimated that vacation alone cost U.S. taxpayers $375,000."
There is a massive disconnect between what our politicians say and what our politicians do.

The high life is good enough for them, but the rest of us have got to "cut back" and suffer becomes times are hard.

But when it comes to money and Congress, the most corrupting influence of all is probably all of the campaign money that gets thrown around.

In America today, it takes gigantic mountains of money to run a successful campaign.

Sadly, the candidate that raises the most money almost always wins.  In federal elections the candidate that raises the most money wins about 90 percent of the time.

More than 5 billion dollars were spent on political campaigns back in 2008.

That represents a huge number of favors that need to be paid back.

In 2012, it is being projected that 8 billion dollars could be spent on political campaigns.

When big corporations and wealthy individuals shovel huge piles of money into political campaigns, it is generally because they expect something in return.

Most of those that get sent to Congress realize that they never would have won if wealthy donors had not showered cash on them.  Most of them understand that they should not bite the hands that feed them if they want the cash to keep rolling in.

Politics in America has become a game that is played by the elite for the benefit of the elite.
Average Americans have the perception that they are involved in the process and that their opinions really matter, but mostly it is just an illusion.

It is so sad.

Meanwhile, members of Congress rapidly get wealthier and average American families continue to suffer.  In fact, the standard of living in the United States has fallen farther over the past three years than at any other time that has ever been recorded in U.S. history.

But for members of Congress the good times just keep on rolling.

Just as it has been for most of human history, the rich rule over the poor.

Does anyone out there believe that we have any hope of changing this?

Veterans Are Part of the 99%: “For 10 Years, We Have Been Fighting Wars that Have Enriched the Wealthiest 1 Percent

Veterans Are Part of the 99%: “For 10 Years, We Have Been Fighting Wars that Have Enriched the Wealthiest 1 Percent, Decimated Our Economy and Left Our Nation With a Generation of Traumatized and Wounded Veterans” - Washington Blog

Veterans Know that War Is Great for the 1% … But Horrible for Them and the Rest of the 99%

I have extensively documented that – contrary to a common myth – war is horrible for our economy. Specifically, war is great for the 1%, but makes the rest of the country poorer.

Veterans from every branch of the military – and across 3 generations – are coming out to support the “occupy” protests. But they are not just outsiders supporting the protesters … they are part of the 99%.
As AP notes today, the veterans fighting the imperial wars for the 1% are part of the 99% who are hurt by the never-ending-war-for-profit-model:
U.S. military veterans … [say] corporate contractors in Iraq made big money while the troops defending them came home – and can’t make a living now.

For too long, our voices have been silenced, suppressed and ignored in favor of the voices of Wall Street and the banks and the corporations,” said Joseph Carter, a 27-year-old Iraq war veteran who marched Wednesday to Zuccotti Park, the epicenter of the movement that has spread worldwide.
***

Their unemployment rate outstrips the national average and is expected to worsen. They worry about preservation of First Amendment rights. And they’re angry.
***

For 10 years, we have been fighting wars that have enriched the wealthiest 1 percent, decimated our economy and left our nation with a generation of traumatized and wounded veterans that will require care for years to come,” said Carter, who leads the national Iraq Veterans Against the War group.
***

In New York on Wednesday, police circled the veterans as they stood in formation in front of the New York Stock Exchange, chanting, “We are veterans! We are the 99 percent!” and “Corporate profits on the rise, soldiers have to bleed and die!
***

I swore to defend their freedoms, and they were being taken away. It’s very unconstitutional,” said McBride, who said he was less than honorably discharged for medical reasons.

McBride said the Occupy Wall Street protest is exactly the kind of civil disobedience protected under U.S. law.

“They wanted to kick us out. This is a peaceful assembly,” he said Thursday. “In the Constitution, the people have the right to peacefully assemble. It’s plain and simple. That’s why I’m here, to defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Back in New York, Bordeleau blamed some financial institutions for U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Wall Street corporations have played a big role in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Bordeleau ….

He said private contractors have reaped big profits in those countries “in pursuit of corporate interests that have had a devastating effect on our economy and our country, benefiting only a small number of people.
The 99 percent have to take a stand,” Bordeleau said, to rectify the biggest income gap between rich and poor since the Great Depression, fueled by what protesters say is Wall Street’s overblown clout in Washington politics.
***

Halliburton and Bechtel think these wars are swell,” they chanted, invoking the names of American companies that received federal contracts for work rebuilding Iraq.

They say those who risked their lives fighting for their country have the right to protest economic policies and business practices that give them a slimmer chance of finding jobs than most Americans.
I agree with my brothers 100%.

America Is Now A Criminal Enterprise And That Is The Good News - Video Rebel's Blog

For the benefit of new readers I previously said that our banking system was designed to fail us and to transfer all wealth to the men who own both the megabanks and our government. The 2012 elections are a sham. The next big event will be an international Summit at which the dollar and the pound will be devalued. All dollar prices will double. Your after tax wages will be cut at least in half within the next 20 months.

I have estimated that at least 9 million Americans will die from starvation in the next decade and that 3 to 5 million Americans will commit suicide rather than starve to death. I also said the bankers will use national health care to begin killing Americans in large numbers after the elections. I have also talked about the coming series of engineered ‘flu outbreaks’ and ‘plagues’ that will kill a few billion people.

By now everyone with a functioning brain knows that Wall Street owns both political parties. The politicians have allowed Wall Street and the City of London to sell 1.4 quadrillion dollars in Credit Default Swaps which are a kind of insurance but have done that without any regulations requiring the sellers (i. e. the banks) to set aside funds to actually pay for those losses. Why should they? All they have to do is to raise your taxes to 100% until 2035.

The bankers realize there are a lot of angry people out there. They have even been developing brain eating vaccines that attack your brain’s ability to express anger. The hope is that you will be nice and mellow while you watch your family die of starvation. But they also have other plans to defend themselves than to reduce brain function.

Their last line of defense is the criminals they hired in DC to protect them from the people they just robbed of 30 trillion dollars. Barack Obama even told the bankers at a function that he was all that stood between them and the mobs with pitchforks. You do realize that our courts our Congress and our Presidents are nothing but accessories after the fact to organized crime. America has become a Criminal Enterprise.

As Jesse Ventura said. “The America I was born in no longer exists. It has become the Fascist States of America.”

That is the Good News.

The Department of Homeland Security and related agencies have 875,000 employees and contractors. One third of DHS employees have criminal records.

And I think that is good news too.

Why? Because no man buys a truck he does not intend to use. The bankers have hired criminals they intend to unleash against America. And that is their weak point.

They can threaten to arrest millions of Americans, torture us, disappear us, deny us trials and kill us. All of that is now perfectly legal in these Fascist States of America.

But you need to remember what Henry Ford said. If you want to stop a war, all you have to do is to arrest the fifty wealthiest Jewish men in the country and there will be no war.

The bankers declared war against America and the world. They see it as a struggle to the death. A large number of people around the world know they are under an unrelenting assault from the bankers. When the bankers begin to behave as badly towards Americans as they have to people in Asia, Africa, the Mideast and Latin America, their days will be numbered.

And that is really Good News.

The Bankers war against America began with their attack on 911. There are many battles left in this war.

We will win. They will lose.
